REGULATION (EC) No 2037/2000 OF THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT AND OF THE COUNCIL of 29 June 2000 on substances that deplete the ozone layer

This directive implements the ozone layer protection policy of the EU and its Member States, linked to the Montreal Protocol.

From 1 January 2010, the use of virgin hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFC) shall be prohibited in the maintenance and servicing of refrigeration and air-conditioning equipment existing at that date. All HCFC shall be prohibited from 1 January 2015.

It means that any systems with HCFC refrigerants including R-22 cannot be maintained, serviced or topped up with new refrigerant after January 1, 2010.

Between that date and January 1, 2015, recycled HCFC may be used. After January 1, 2015, the use of HCFC refrigerants is completely prohibited on European Union flagged vessels.
